Overview
Valga County is located on Estonia's southern border and is known for the twin city of Valga-Valka, split between Estonia and Latvia. The area is rich in forests and lakes, offering a quiet rural life. The Otepää area is Estonia's winter sports center, often called the country's winter capital.
History & Character
Valga received town rights in 1584 and has historically been an important railway junction. After World War I, the town was divided between Estonia and Latvia. The Otepää Order Castle ruins recall the Livonian Order's rule. The region has been the cradle of Estonian national sport of cross-country skiing.
