History & Character
Lääne County was part of the ancient Läänemaa county. Haapsalu received town rights in 1279 and was the center of the Saare-Lääne bishopric. In the 19th century, Haapsalu became a famous resort town, visited even by Russian tsars for healing. Tchaikovsky loved the quiet seaside life here.
