Yleiskuvaus
Hiiu County encompasses Estonia's second largest island, Hiiumaa, and its surrounding islets. It is one of the most sparsely populated areas in Estonia, known for its pristine nature, tranquil lifestyle, and unique island culture. Hiiumaa is an ideal place for those seeking peace and closeness to nature.
Historia ja luonne
Hiiumaa has been inhabited for at least 8,000 years. The island historically belonged to the Saare-Lääne bishopric and later to the Swedish Crown. Kõpu Lighthouse, built in 1531, is one of the oldest continuously operating lighthouses in the world. Hiiumaa has been home to seafarers and fishermen throughout its history.
