Viljandi County is known for its unique cultural life, scenic Lake Viljandi, and historic Order Castle. The county seat Viljandi is a small but culturally rich town that hosts the annual Viljandi Folk Music Festival. Viljandimaa is also one of Estonia's strongest agricultural regions.

Viljandi is one of Estonia's oldest settlements, mentioned as early as 1154 in Arabic geographical sources. The Viljandi Order Castle ruins recall one of the Livonian Order's largest fortresses.
