Historia ja luonne
Viljandi is one of Estonia's oldest settlements, mentioned as early as 1154 in Arabic geographical sources. The Viljandi Order Castle ruins recall one of the Livonian Order's largest fortresses. The town has been an important trade center on the Tartu-Pärnu route for centuries. The cultural capital tradition took root in the 1990s with the folk music movement.
