Tartu is Estonia's second largest city and intellectual capital, home to approximately 100,000 people. Known as the home of the University of Tartu, the city is Estonia's centre of education and science. Situated on the banks of the Emajõgi River, Tartu stands out with its youthful energy, rich cultural life, and historic architecture. In 2024, Tartu held the title of European Capital of Culture.
Historia ja luonne
Tartu is one of the oldest cities in the Baltics, first mentioned in 1030. The University of Tartu was founded in 1632 by Swedish King Gustav II Adolf, transforming the city into an academic centre. Toomemägi hill with its cathedral ruins has been the heart of the city for centuries. The Treaty of Tartu in 1920 recognised Estonian independence.
