## Overview

Nõmme is Tallinn's greenest and quietest district, characterized by pine forests, historic wooden villas, and a garden city atmosphere. The former independent city has preserved its unique identity and is especially popular among families who value peace and proximity to nature.

## History and character

Nõmme developed from a summer resort to a garden city in the late 19th century, receiving city rights in 1926. It was an independent city until 1940 when it was merged with Tallinn. The area's history is connected to the construction of the railway in 1870, which brought summer visitors and later permanent residents.
